This fine early stool depicts an elephant - an ashanti symbol of power and strength. Carved from a single block of very heavy brown wood, this large, impressive stool had a spiritual meaning alongside its functional use. In Ashanti society, it is custom for every man and woman to have their own stool, which also served as the seat of the owner’s soul. Well used warm patina.
