Encrustation, weathering consistent with age, this late period of Ancient Egypt was marked by a resurgence of native Egyptian rule following the expulsion of the Assyrians. It was a time of cultural revival and artistic flourishing, which continued into the Ptolemaic Period (332-30 BC), following the conquests of Alexander the Great. This monumental mask, likely part of an anthropoid Sarcophagus, would have been used to honor and protect the deceased in their journey to the afterlife. The large eyes and ears symbolize the vigilance and perception necessary in the spiritual realm.
