Important Group of Kabuki Real Photo Postcards
1920 - 1930
405 Cards total
Provenance: John Dominis Holt, Honolulu, HI
A rare collection of 405 real - photo postcards of individual actors as well as re - enactment of scenes from many Kabuki plays and from other theatrical productions. Almost all cards have long, comprehensive notes from a unknown but enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable Kabuki aficionado, who provided information on the date of the opening of the play or spectacle depicted, the theater where it was performed, the title, and the names of the actor or actors portrayed on the card. Since the cards themselves, obviously printed in a small quantity and distributed around the time of production, have no captions whatsoever, these manuscript annotations make this a extremely valuable resource. All cards are mint or close to mint condition.
