Native tanned buffalo hide and sinew sewn
Provenance: Treasures of the West, The Stella Foote Collection of Western Artifacts
On March 18, 1988, Butterfield & Butterfield presented the largest private collection of Buffalo Bill memorabilia ever to be offered at auction. The Buffalo Bill collection was part of Stella and Don Foote’s “Last Stand Museum” in Billings, Montana and contained over 300 personal mementos, Wild West Show items and Western artifacts. The auction attracted world-wide attention and an international buying audience which resulted in pushing the sale over the half million dollar mark.
Today, once again, collectors of Western Americana will have the opportunity to walk away with a piece of American history. On November 9th, Stella and Don Foote’s personal collection will go on the block at Butterfield & Butterfield. This collection depicts many aspects of the American West such as mining camps, saloons, pioneers, cowboys, lawmen and outlaws. Of particular interest is authentic material pertaining to well known Western characters and events. The most famous of these Western figures is undoubtedly Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer (photo below). Custer’s last stand at Little Big Horn is well presented in this collection by authentic Custer memorabilia and Indian artifacts from the Custer battlefield.
The “Old West” lives in the Foote collection, the historic content of which it is as one of the most significant personal collections in the country. The Footes began collecting 1931and, what began as a hobby, eventually became a full time job and prompted the Foote’s to build the Last Stand Museum, which they opened and operated until Don Foote’s death in the early 1070s. Butterfield & Butterfield is pleased to offer this historic assemblage of Western artifacts, which presents to the collector a full-circle view of that uniquely American phenomenon, the American West.
A wonderful matched pair of outstanding visual quality and workmanship. Rare!
