Late Classic, ca. A.D. 550-950
Diameter 4 3/4"
Provenance: Sotheby's, November 1999, Lot 70
Private Collection, California
The iredescent shell (possibly haliotis) with pierced openwork design and finely incised with the profile of a noble figure wearing a beaded necklace and gracefully reaching towards a bird which appears to be gently landing on the arm of the figure; red pigments accentuate the incised design.
Cf. Easby & Scott (1970: fig. 197) for a similar example in the Field Museum, Chicago.
