Magnificent Haida Food Bowl - SOLD
Alder wood with opercula shell
1840 - 1860
Height 6 7/8" Width 14 1/2" Length 18 1/2"
Provenance: Private collection, Olympia, WA
Paul and Mary Thiry, Seattle, WA
Carved from a solid block of alder, this magnificent bowl is one of only a handful that exist with a double eye structure design on the ends according to Bill Holm in his landmark book "Indian Art of the Northwest Coast - A Dialogue on Craftsmanship and Aesthetics". I have handled a couple of dozen of the more common type especially when I owned Northwest Galleries in Anchorage in the early 1980's, this by far is the best of the best. The carving and sensibility in design and form make it a unquestionable masterpiece of exceptionally large size and volume.*
*A almost identical bowl by the same hand and of a smaller size with condition issues was sold over ten years ago to a Bothell Washington collector for $80,000.-
