Polik-mana or Butterfly Maiden is represented in this katsina, or spirit being, in Hopi mythology. Every spring she dances from flower to flower, pollinating the fields and flowers and bringing life-giving rain to the Arizona desert. In this splendid highly complex example dating to approximately the year 1910 its has been culturally used to initiate and teach young girls about the spirit world.
