Earp, who had operated a number of successful saloons after leaving Tombstone, opened the Dexter Saloon in Nome in the fall of 1899. It was Nome's first two-story building and its largest saloon, and became a sort of de facto town hall and gathering place due to its large size. Earp left Nome in 1901 with over $80,000 in profit.
