Pitcairn Island was the location chosen by mutineers from The Bounty in 1789. Disaffected crewmen led by acting lieutenant, Fletcher Christian, seized control of the ship from their Captain William Bligh. Pitcairn people, some 7th & 8th generations of the mutineers. of only around 60 men, women and children, run a fragile economy, subsidized by carvings such as this one. Miro wood is rare and harvested on the coral atoll of Henderson island, belonging to the Pitcairn group.
